Season 1 Episode 2: Terror with an Air Plane

Two personal injuries discuss several personal injury scenarios when someone steals a plane threatening to crash it into Walmart in Mississippi.

TERROR WITH AN AIRPLANE

Terror with a Tupelo airplane in Mississippi, struck locals and other people all across the state as news reports from the likes of CNNWLBTWAPT, FOX40, and even the NYTIMES describe an incident where an individual made threats of crashing a plane into a local Walmart. Local reports to the Tupelo Fire Department and Tupelo Police Department came in around five o’clock on Saturday morning that a Tupelo airplane was circling over the city.

According to investigators, threats came from a 9-1-1 call with a man by the name of Cory Wayne Patterson. John Quaka, Tupelo Chief of Police, made efforts with the Tupelo Fire Department in order to evacuate the Walmart and shut down many streets in the area.

Supposedly, Patterson worked as a lineman at the Tupelo Regional Airport for over 10 years, giving him access to the aircraft. With no pilot license and a full tank of fuel, that made the hijacked Tupelo airplane a deadly weapon.

Investigators could not determine a reason for why Patterson stole the Tupelo airplane and made the threats to crash into Walmart. Allegedly, the incident went on for quite a few hours while authorities tried to make contact and negotiate with the pilot.

However, the initial attempt made to negotiate a landing seemed perilous for police because Patterson did not know how to land. Luckily, they were able to get a private pilot to guide Patterson to a safe landing.

Unfortunately, Patterson aborted the landing and took off again. Eventually, he was able to make a landing in Ripley, Mississippi, a rural area around 40 miles northwest from Tupelo.

This was around 10 in the morning when negotiators got back in touch with the Tupelo airplane. Fortunately, authorities were able to determine that he was able to land in a field unharmed.

The Tupelo airplane, however, was not in the best shape after the landing. Supposedly, the damage to the Tupelo airplane was not very severe, which would allow it to be able to fly again.

Following the incident, booked with no bond set, Cory Patterson is facing charges including Grand Larceny and making terrorist threats. Apparently, there are also speculations of the federal government following through with federal charges for the terroristic threats.

At this point, the news story ends, leaving attorney Everett Pepper and associate attorney Daryl Porter to discuss the matter and how the incident at hand could relate to a personal injury case. The two make some very valid points concerning the Columbus Air Force Base, and why they did not take any action.

In contrast, they talk about the details of the Tupelo airplane he stole and Patterson’s job at the airport. Patterson’s ability to have access to that plane and what kind of damage the act could have done.

Incidents like these that turn out poorly can cause other people to suffer from someone else’s actions. Crashing a plane into Walmart is enough to cause severe damages to property, injuries to other people, and, in worst-case scenarios, death.

Our attorneys pay tribute to Suicide Prevention Month and hit some touching subjects along the way. With this situation being unpredictable, there could be reason to believe that mental stability could have played a part.

Those struggling with mental disorder or other mental anguish should seek guidance or treatment in some way. The easy way out is never the answer, as you could hurt yourself and others in the process.

Lucky enough, no one, including Patterson, suffered any injuries as a result of the incident.
